Rules

  1. You must come to school each day and take part in the all the lessons and activities for which you have paid.
  2. If you are in New Zealand on a student visa, NZ Immigration Department policy dictates that if you are absent from school for longer than 6 classes (i.e., three day’s school full- time or six day’s school part-time) we are obliged to advise the Department that you are not fulfilling your visa requirements. This can lead to the cancellation of your visa.
  3. If you are going to be late to class – in the morning please telephone prior to 9:00am, or in the afternoon, please advise your teacher. If you are more than 10 minutes late for class without having informed your teacher earlier, you must wait until the next break before joining the class.
  4. You should take an active part in your lessons and complete all tasks and homework assignments. Disrupting other students unnecessarily is not permitted. The school asks all students to be polite towards staff and fellow students and to respect each other’s different cultural backgrounds.
  5. Only speak English in class, the teacher will ask you to leave the room if you continue to speak your first language.
  6. You are most welcome to use the kitchen and coffee making areas, however if you cook something, please clean up after yourself. Eating and drinking is not permitted in the classrooms – please take your refreshments in to the student lounge or outside.
  7. Smoking is not permitted inside the school. Please feel free to smoke outside and use the ashtrays provided for your cigarette butts. In NZ smoking is not allowed in public areas. Smoking is not permitted for under 16 years olds.
  8. Students are not permitted to enter the teachers’ resource room or the office area without asking. Text books or tapes are never loaned to students. Reading books are issued by your class teacher.
  9. If you borrow clothing or equipment from your host family, please replace it if you lose or damage it.
  10. Please do not drive without an International Drivers License or the equivalent.
  11. Please do not ask to make national or international telephone calls if you do not have an international calling card at your homestay. Please note that the student telephone has a toll bar on it so cannot be used for any number that starts with a “0”. Pre-pay mobile phones are sold in many stores in Taupo.

Discipline Procedure:
Students are given 3 written notices. The first notice involves discussion with the Director and Student Counsellor. The second notice is reported to the agent/parents/guardian. Upon receiving the third notice the student is asked to leave the school and NZIS is notified in order to cancel the student visa if relevant. Immediate departure from the school and homestay is required upon receiving the third notice. There is no refund of fees if the student has received three notices. Absenteeism is considered a disciplinary issue. In any case where a student is in breach of the NZ Law, expulsion can be immediate.

INSURANCE:
All students are expected to have arranged their own travel & medical insurance for the course duration and their return travel. Please check your policy covers the adventure activities offered at TLOEC. We can organise insurance for you through Unicare or contact www.uni-care.org directly. Please notify the school on your enrolment form if you have an infectious illness or allergies, and if you are taking any life dependent medication.
