Parent and Child English Programme

Aim: To provide General English language tuition for parents while their children attend a Taupo elementary school or daycare. The Parent is responsible for the care of the child after school hours and in the school holidays.

Accommodation: We suggest short term (less than 12 weeks) Parent and Child stay with a Kiwi homestay family, while long term (more than 12 weeks) have the option to rent a furnished house or apartment.

  1. Homestay NZ$200.00/person/per week includes 3 meals/7 days and daily school transfers (if required).
  2. Furnished rental house / apartment estimated at NZ$250.00/week + utilities.

Duration: Ten to fiifty weeks. The 2008 NZ Primary School year is divided into four by ten week terms:
Term 1: Thursday 7th February to Friday 18th April
Term 2: Monday 5th May to Friday 4th July
Term 3: Monday 21st July to Friday 26th September
Term 4: Monday 13th October to Friday 19th December

Minimum age of children: Five years for NZ elementary school (passport evidence required) or pre-schooling / daycare is available for children under the age of five at NZ$18.00 - $30.00/day, depending on age; it is more expensive for children under two years of age. The homestay is not expected to provide a babysitting service.

Fees: (all prices are quoted in NZ dollars)

  1. Accommodation placement /family $300.00
  2. Transfer from Auckland International Airport to Taupo $150.00 / person.
  3. Mother’s tuition fees - Part-time $290.00/week 15 hours, or Full-time $370.00/week for 25 hours. Children at local primary schools. $7,150.00 per annum, $1787.50/term (10 weeks). This price includes a bilingual teacher aide for 1 hour / day for the first month.
  4. Extra or ongoing bilingual assistance is at an extra cost after the first term.
  5. Family enrolment fee $300.00. This includes student counsellor, TLOEC registration and primary school registration, course materials and free internet access while studying at the language school.

Extra possible costs while living in Taupo: Daily living expenses e.g. doctor, taxi, telephone, weekend recreation, children may wish to join clubs, take dance or music lessons, buy ski passes etc.  Daily transfer to schools, if not within walking distance for non-homestay parents. Consequently, some long term parents buy a car $1,000.00+

  1. Parent must be responsible for children throughout travel, duration of study and stay in NZ. A maximum of three children can accompany one mother.
  2. Parent must attend Taupo Language Centre general English classes throughout the course duration as a regular Full/Part time student. The Parent must have the correct visa applicable to her/his nationality and length of study.  See NZ Immigration Service
  3. Children and Parents must comply with NZQA, NZIS, NZ Laws (i.e. car seats are compulsory for children under five years of age) and MoE regulations. Children must obey primary school rules.
  4. During statutory holidays and primary school holidays the parent must look after the child/ren and therefore cannot attend English classes.
  5. All persons must have full travel and medical insurance for their course duration and return travel. Please check that your policy covers the adventure activities offered at TLOEC. We can organise insurance through Unicare Unicare Insurance
